Welcome on the iGEM
Evry Genopole association’s website

Our Association

Our association has been founded in 2012 by Evry students, with the aim of presenting, every year, a project to the iGEM competition.

It is mostly composed of students from the University of Evry-Val-d’Essonne and the University of Paris-Saclay, and based at the Genopole in Evry.

We have already presented six projects during the last six years.

Here is the ranking of our iGEM team :

2012 🥇 2013 🥇 2014 🥉 2015 🥈 2016 🥉 2017 🥇 2018 ?

iGEM ?

iGEM, standing for « International Genetically Engineered Machine », is an international competition of biological engineering, created in 2004 by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and taking place in Boston (USA).

This competition brings together more than 300 teams, composed of students from all around the world every year, on innovating projects aimed to build new biological systems.

iGEM takes advantage of a very important visibility and recognition through the international scientific community.

If you want to learn more about the competition, the participating teams or other informations, you can consult the official website of iGEM: http://igem.org/Main_Page

Our projects

For this year's edition, we are interested in bacterial communication.

In the 70´s, it was discovered that bacteria were able to communicate with each other by the quorum sensing. This system allows bacteria to know the size of their population within their environment and to adapt their behavior accordingly.

In January 2017, researchers discovered that bacteriophages, bacterial viruses, were able to establish a quorum sensing. (Erez, Zohar, et al. "Communication between viruses guides lysis–lysogeny decisions." Nature 541.7638 (2017): 488-493).

So we had the idea to transpose the quorum sensing system of the bacteriophages into bacteria to create a new bacterial communication system.
